She remained silent as he ranted, and she couldnt help but imagine he was ranting at her, her eyes flinching. She refrained from gasping as he spun around, seeing his own scars that covered his back, more intense then the ones she had seen on his face and chest. And here she was complaining about one scar. Guilt filled her as she stood, wondering why the hell she walked over to him and placed one hesitant hand on his shoulder. "Rafe. We all regret things in our life but its the people that accept it, that move on although it doesnt stop the pain you feel inside." Her green eyes traced the plains of his back, noticing the storng muscle underneath tanned skin. One delicate finger traced a scar down his back softly while waiting for him to reply.

Head hanging, he leaned forward onto both arms. Sighing deeply, he shook his head as he leaned over the rock that held all of his weapons. 'I know... Hell I know but it doesn't make things easier to bear.' Straightening, Rafe turned, his eyes haunted with memories of the past. Her fingers trailed along his shoulders with the movement, but he didn't protest their prescence, the opposite rather. Grabbing her hand on impulse, he brought it to his lips, pressing a kiss in the exact center of her palm then placing her hand over his heart.

Gabrielles eyes softened at his words, narrowing slightly at the pain she saw in his eyes. Opening her mouth to say something she stopped as he took her hand, kissing it and placing it over his heart, a obviously polite guesture yet she was lost as to what its real meaning was. Her mouth stayed open slightly, cocking her head in confusion, flaming red hair claiming the skin of her shoulders. Realising she was acting strangely, she shook her head to clear her thoughts, meaning to say what she had been going to. "Its not going to get easier Rafe, but if you blame yourself it makes it harder." her green eyes flickered to her hands till ove rhis heart as she went to pull it away, not wanting to mean something she didnt. Not wanting him to get the wrong idea.

She was uncomforatble, he could see, and he released her hand, dropping his own with a shake of his head. 'I know, I just ...' Rafe shook his head instead of finishing the sentence, and the resolve in his eyes hardened. He wouldn't fail again. He wouldn't let anything happen to Gabrielle. Hopefully, that would be enough to reconcile his guilt. 'You have to stay here, safe.' He told her, eyes flashing with determination. He WOULD protect her. He WOULD save her.

She could see where he was coming from but she wasnt going to let him talk to her like that, even if the words were said softly, she wasnt going ot be forced around by him. Especially him. "You cant make me Rafe. Ive survived this long and I dont need a baby sitter. You hardly know me, giving you no permission to tell me what to do." Her voice had hardened slightly but she wasnt yelling at him, merely laying down the ground rules. Moving away from him, she walked back over to her sweatshirt, starting to pul it over her head.

As soon as the shirt went over her head, his hand were there, one on either side of her face, forcing her to look him in the eye. 'You have to stay, it's part of our bargian. And I know you well enough to say that though you can protect yourself fine, I'm going to do so too. I don't know why, I don't know what is making me do this, but I have to keep you safe.' He growled it, not in anger though, just trying to make her listen. To make her realise that it wasn't just him being an overprotective male. It was true, he had no idea why this female drew him like she did, had no idea why he needed to protect her so much. All he knew was that he would protect her, would give his life if it meant she would never have her life on the line again.

Damn it. She'd forgotten about that happy little fact. She rolled her eyes inwardly, annoyed that he had won and that there was nothing she could do about it short of giving him back the insulin she needed so badly. "Fine," she spoke low, yanking her chin out of his grasp. "But it doesnt mean im going to like it." Her green eyes held his defiantly before she looked away, walkng to the far side of the cave and plonking herself down by a wall, curling herself into a ball.

Following her with his eyes, Rafe knew that he had pretty much forced her into this. 'Fuck. I'm sorry for putting you through all of this Gabrielle. It's been a while since I've actually spoken to someone, and he wasn't even human, not really. I swear, I've lost all of my social skills.' He gave her a little smile, one that probably looked more like a grimance, and his back thumped against the wall behind him, opposite her. Sliding down, he tucked up his legs and rested his arms on his knees, watching her.

Gabrielle heard him out even though she looked straight through him. "Yeah you have Rafe, forced me into it I mean. So ill tel you right now, that as soon as im allowed to leave i wont be wanting to stay any longer." He looked so alone over by the wall all by himself and she fought the urge to go over to him, wanting to keep the fraying piece of will she had left against him. Thin delicate hands went to the half braided hair, continuing her previous work on the flaming red strands, green eyes locked onto his.

His uncanny eyes stayed on her, sadness in his gaze. This female had done nothing wrong, had meerely been hunting for the medicine that would keep her alive, and he had come along and forced his presence on her. With a silent snarl he stood again, stalking over to his bag and rumaging inside. Pulling out a pair of jeans and a shirt, he didn't even look at her, just said clearly, 'I'm going to go get changed. Try not to kill yourself or anything.' His voice was hard, and as he left the cave and moved into one of the adjoining caves, he shook his head.
He had found a small waterfall that fell into an underground lake when he had first come here, and he now used it to wash away the sweat and dirt from his training, leaving his sweat pants and clean clothes within reach but out of range of the water. The water was cool, though not overly cold, and the little pool it fell into drained through unseen cracks in the bottom. He didn't know where the source of the water was, and he didn't particularly care. It hadn't killed him to use it, and so probably wouldn't in the future. With a groan, he dropped to the ground, collapsing into a sitting position under the spray of the waterfall. The water came up to his chest, and that was the shallowest part of the lake, so he also used it to swim in. Running a hand through his sopping wet hair, he shook his head, sending droplets of water everywhere. Sighing, he knew that he should get up and go back, but he really couldn't be bothered moving, especially if she was going to keep insulting him.

Gabrielle closed her eyes as he left, feeling the cold reach her even through her turtleneck in the slightly humid cave. Running her arms up and down her chilling arms, she got to her feet, unable to see Rafe but hearing him walking around in some other part of the cave. She knew she had to make her own warmth seeing as much as she wanted to leave the cave, she wasnt just going to walk out on Rafe without him knowing, him having left her in confidence that she would be there when he got back. She had to admit, the cave was huge and it was a wonder she hadnt spotted it before, her walks and searches often taking her far from her makeshift home. Her sneakers made soft, light thuds on the hard floor of the cave as she made her way around what she took to be the main cavern of the shelter.
Apon nearing the smaller room into which Rafe had turned off into, Gabrielle heard a groan. Stopping, eyes narrowing she walked upto the entrance suddenly to find Rafe immersed to his chest in water.... Clear water. Leaping back, green eyes wide, her eyes dropped for him face and body to the cave floor awkwardly. "Shit Rafe. Umm... Ill just go and sit where you left me." Feeling a blush creep over her light skin, she went to turn around and leave him to his own devices.

Hearing the soft scuff of shoes, Rafe's head came up in time to see a very red Gabrielle. The shock on her face was almost laugh-worthy apart from the fact that she had a reason, a big reason. Standing with a rush of water, he pulled himself out and grabbed his jeans, chucking them on and shaking the water out of his hair. Coming up behind her, he grabbed her arm, turning her back. Her eyes were on the floor, and he lifted her head with a finger under her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze. 'It's fine, seriously. Why are you so embarrassed? Surely I'm not the first male you've seen.' His voice was soft, yet a look of bewilderment was on his face. Surely someone as beautiful as her would have had her fair share of male attention. What shocked him was the spike of jealousy that shot through him at the thought of her being with another man, and he blinked, internally trying to shake the feeling off.

Gabrielle met his eyes as he lifted her chin up, the blush still slight on her creamy skin. She let out a small sigh, shaking her head. "What will it take you to realise that no one, especially guys, tag along after me? Ive.... Never seen any man.... naked." She looked slightly vulnerable for a second, her green eyes wdiened slighly before she covered it, turning away and walking back into the main cave, emmersing herself in looking at his laid out weapons, trying not to magine what was going though his mind right then and there. "To answer your question you havent yet spoken, the why of the matter is because i never had the time. I also have had no men in my life as of such." Whilst speaking she looked over the weapons she had already seen, running out of way to avoid looking at him. Normally she would have been confident about another matter, but this.... was too embarrassing to her.

Shit, that changed everything. He wouldn't have guessed it by her actions earlier, as she had seemed perfectly confident around him. Hesitating for a moment, he followed slowly, keeping out of her way. Coming up behind her, he stopped a metre back and took a deep breath, running his hand through his hair. 'Then ... shit I'm sorry about that. That would have been the last thing you needed.' Another hesitation, then he moved up next to her, looking down at his array of weapons, set out for training. 'Do you know how to use any of these?' He asked, changing the subject. In a world like the one they lived in, a person had to know how to protect themselves, but most only had a couple of guns and maybe a knife or two. What he had layed out was an absolute arsenal: knives, guns, throwing daggers, throwing stars, short swords, longer curved blades, even nunchakus.

Gabrielle stayed silent, feeling him come up beside her. He truely felt sorry for her, realised how different it was for her and she appreciated that. Glad for the change in subject she eyed the weapons again, thanking him with her eyes before she did so. "Well.. I prefer hand to hand combat but in terms of weapons, either twin daggers or... I suppose a gun as a last resort." Her green eyes flickered to his, shrugging, picking up a beautifully crafted dagger, her breath inhaling sharply. "Its beautiful Rafe. I almost wouldnt want to fight with it." Looking up at him, holding the dagger across the palms of her hands she realised how close they were standing,s hifting her weight back slightly.
